Alla prima

An Italian phrase that means "at first attempt". It's a wet-on-wet technique where wet paint is applied to wet paint, usually in a single sitting. This technique allows the artist to cover the canvas quickly and determine the main colours and relationships in the painting.

Plein air

A French expression that means "in the open air". It's a direct painting technique where the artist paints a landscape entirely outdoors. The entire painting is usually done outside, but touch-ups may be done in the studio.
