Explore the wonderful medium of soft pastels! Each 3-hour lesson will involve introducing a concept, a demonstration of a technique, and then completion of an exercise, study or painting during the class, with Karen’s personal feedback. The final weeks of term give students opportunity to paint from their own reference photo.

Topics include:

  • Know your pastels – characteristics, application, types, brands, fixatives, framing, storage, organising, safety, blending and layering methods

  • Know your supports – characteristics, and advantages of different supports and papers, including using dark papers and pastel primers

  • Choosing a subject – what to look for to achieve good composition, mapping shapes by creating thumbnails as a thinking/planning tool

  • Value does the work – understanding value; using a value chart, drawing in value masses and how to identify the value of a pastel

  • Underpainting 1 - Monochromatic using a single pastel

  • Underpainting 2 - Monochromatic using 4 pastels

  • Colour gets the credit – Colour theory, choosing colours, mixing colours, limited palettes

  • Underpainting 3 – Complementary underpainting

  • Getting Edgy – The importance of edges in leading the eye, creating contrast, focus and interest

  • The Finish line – how to know when your painting is finished

This class is best suited to an Intermediate skill level (basic watercolour experience or experience in a different painting/drawing medium), however beginners are also welcome. Penelope introduces this course with the understanding of paper wetness and watercolour mixing techniques, using small imagery on the first day. Initially, you will explore Still-Life, building up to subsequent weeks of Landscapes from photos and finally Figures from photos. Will always be mindful of watercolour processes, exploring ways to tell a story. This beautiful medium is expressive and once the understanding of the processes are understood the artist will express in their own way the joy of watercolour!

In this unique painting the figure from life course, you will have the opportunity of taking the same live pose from drawing to completed oil painting with valuable instruction, demonstrations and feedback by artist, Mark Feiler. The higher cost of the course includes the same live model holding long poses for each of the 3-hour long classes!

The course is most suited to an Intermediate/Advanced skill level, however beginners (with either drawing experience, or experience in a different painting medium/ subject matter, such as landscapes) are also welcome.

Alla prima

An Italian phrase that means "at first attempt". It's a wet-on-wet technique where wet paint is applied to wet paint, usually in a single sitting. This technique allows the artist to cover the canvas quickly and determine the main colours and relationships in the painting.

Plein air

A French expression that means "in the open air". It's a direct painting technique where the artist paints a landscape entirely outdoors. The entire painting is usually done outside, but touch-ups may be done in the studio.

This introductory drawing course sets you up for drawing the human figure. It emphasizes developing a strong foundation of key strategies using the classic Atelier plaster casts, which allows you to transition to drawing the figure from life. Life Drawing sessions, using a live model, are held every Wednesday Evening. You have the opportunity of joining 5 x Tutored Life Drawing Sessions run on the Wednesday Night concurrently with the 5 week Monday Night Drawing Course. This will give you the opportunity of practicing your skills, and applying concepts you have learnt at this drawing course.

This 5 week transitioning course allows for a strong development of the foundations of figure drawing by taking advantage of the tradition of drawing studio casts. This provides longer drawing cycles to understand and consider the key elements of capturing the human figure. This process-based, practical course sets the foundation to grow your drawing further.
